Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 9, 2026

1. Overview

This policy explains what information bitURL collects, why we collect it, and how we handle it. We collect the minimum data needed to run a fast, reliable, and abuse-free URL shortening service.

2. Information You Provide

If you create an account, we store your email address, your name, and a securely hashed version of your password (we never store plain-text passwords). If you contact us, we keep the message you send so we can respond.

3. Information Collected Automatically

When you create a short link without an account, we record your IP address solely to enforce the fair-use daily creation limit. When someone opens a short link, we record anonymous click data — approximate location (country/city derived from IP), device type, browser, operating system, and referrer — to power the analytics shown to the link owner. We do not sell this data.

4. Free Service & Future Paid Plans

bitURL is currently completely free and we collect no payment or billing information whatsoever. If optional paid plans are introduced in the future, payment details would be handled by a dedicated payment provider and this policy would be updated before any such launch.

5. Cookies & Local Storage

We use browser local storage to keep you signed in to your dashboard. We do not use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

6. Data Retention

Account data is retained while your account is active. Short links and their analytics are retained until you delete them or your account. Anonymous creation records used for rate limiting are only meaningful for the current day.

7. Data Security

We use industry-standard measures — hashed passwords, signed session tokens, and least-privilege database access — to protect your data. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information.

8. Your Rights

You may update your profile, delete your links, or request deletion of your account and associated data at any time via the dashboard settings or by contacting us.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be indicated by updating the “Last updated” date above.
